Seniors Stop in Lisbon, A Top City
Lisbon was selected as one of the top cities in the state of North Dakota. Senior travelers will find Lisbon at the south end of the Sheyenne Valley Scenic Byway which runs north through Valley City to Cooperstown.
This county seat has a population that runs just over 2,000. Senior visitors will find a myriad of small towns in southeast North Dakota but let’s go for a visit and see why Lisbon was selected the top city in the state.
Lisbon was founded in 1880 by Joseph L. Colton, who named the town after Lisbon, New York, his wife’s hometown. Pioneer Lisbon newspaper publisher W.D. Boyce is credited with importing the concept for the Boy Scouts from England to the United States. This farming and ranching community sits on the banks of the Sheyenne River.
The verdant campus of the North Dakota Veterans Home, established in 1891, provides pleasant retirement living for military vets. Construction is underway for a large new facility adjacent to the current one.
Picnickers in Sandager Park can watch canoeists paddle by on the Sheyenne. Camping is available in Sandager Park and five miles south of the city in Dead Colt Creek Recreation Area. TripAdvisor suggests seniors check out the Sheyenne National Grasslands.
Seniors Find A Speedway And A Junkyard
Seniors if you are into racing, you will find some super dirt racetrack excitement and action every Sunday night in Lisbon. “Loyal Fans, Talented Drivers and Proud Volunteers have been creating memories and traditions for more than 40 years.”
And how about this…a well renown junkyard. I have always in my “second life” wanted to own and run a junkyard. Weird me, huh? The junk yard in Lisbon ND is awesome and a great resource for many automotive needs. You will be surprised at the options you have.
Senior golfers, toss the clubs in the trunk and play a round or two at the London Bissell Golf Course, 9 holes over 3,158 yards with a par of 36.
Seniors Enjoy Old Movie Theater
Downtown Lisbon is home to the Scenic movie theater, which was established in 1911. The Scenic is the oldest, continuously running theater in the United States.
The Happy Days Festival features a community celebration, steak fry, stock car races, rock climbing wall, pancake breakfast, parade, street dances Friday and Saturday nights, Citywide rummage sale. Lisbon, ND is a great place to live, work & play, and visit.
Loaded with history, check out the Ransom County Courthouse, the Lisbon Opera House and a host of historic homes of every nature. One would think that a small place would mean fewer amenities, but that’s not entirely the case here, so set your GPS for Lisbon and plan to spend some quality time in this top North Dakota city. Enjoy. -jeb
