Seniors Visit Bridgeport
Bridgeport, the most populous city in Connecticut, is located on the Pequonnock River and Long Island Sound. Bridgeport is home to over 144,000 residents, 1,300 acres of public land for parks and 13 officially delineated neighborhoods across 16 square miles of land. Bridgeport has many attractions for senior citizens to see and visit.
The circus-promoter and former mayor, P.T. Barnum, was a famous resident of the city. Barnum built three houses there, and housed his circus in town during winters. As you probably know by now, my wife and I would first head off into the older district of a town like Bridgeport. Seniors will find that Bridgeport offers a wealth of attractions: majestic shoreline parks, fascinating museums, regional baseball, hockey, festivals, national musical acts and performances.
TripAdvisor says the #1 thing for seniors to do is the The Adventure Park at The Discovery Museum that hosts the states first ‘aerial forest park’. The Beardsley Zoo comes in a close second. Connecticut’s only zoo, the Beardsley is actively committed to species conservation and research. The zoo is set on 35 acres and includes an indoor rain forest.
Bridgeport History Interests Seniors
The Bridgeport Harbor is bordered by Long Island Sound and is formed by the estuary of the Pequonnock River and Yellow Mill Pond, an inlet. English colonists began settling along the Pequonnock River after 1639. The Bridgeport Downtown North Historic District is a 20-acre area that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 and includes the Fairfield County Courthouse. For you history buffs like me, read more on the development of the city over the years since the first recorded settlement.
Senior travelers can take an aerial view of the city or you can play a round of golf, skate the Danbury Ice Arena or take in a polo match. The Bridgeport Tourism Directory can help with accommodations as well as tours and events. Situated on Long Island Sound, Bridgeport is a small city with much to offer.
A big tourist draw to Bridgeport is the Captain’s Cove Seaport. Numerous restaurants fry up tasty seafood dishes and an array of unique shops can be found along the boardwalk. Close by the port is Seaside Park that was one of the first waterfront parks established in the US.
The beach offers sandy shores with picnic areas and sport fields. I’ll depart today with a few more suggestions for short drives from Bridgeport that are all inviting. You can “punch in” the respective website for each attraction.
