SENIORS JOURNEY TO EUREKA SPRINGS ARKANSAS

Seniors Visit Another Great Mainstreet Town

Unknown-1Here’s another one of America’s Gems and a Great Mainstreet selection by Travel & Leisure.  On February 14, 1880, Eureka Springs, Arkansas  (pop. 2,000+) was incorporated as a city and thousands of visitors came to the springs and the awesome spa.

A year later In 1881, Eureka Springs enjoyed the status of Arkansas’ fourth largest city, and in 1889 it was the second largest city, behind Little Rock, the state capital. Eureka Springs, Arkansas has been a popular resort town and senior vacation destination since the 1800’s.

Nestled in the Ozark Mountains of Northwest Arkansas near the Missouri border, Eureka Springs became known early on for its healing waters, Victorian architecture, historical significance and as a haven for artists.

One of the most delightful spots in the Southern mountains, Eureka Springs, Arkansas shines in winter. Senior visitors won’t find crowds seeking relief from the lowland heat.

In their place come couples looking for a little romance and holiday shoppers keen for those special gifts that can’t be found in a department store.

Eureka Springs has been selected as one of America’s Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Eureka Springs has historically been called “The Little Switzerland of America” and “The Stairstep Town” because of its mountainous terrain and the winding, up-and-down paths of its streets and walkways.

The streets wind around the town, and no two intersect at a 90 degree angle and furthermore…there are no traffic lights. Senior visitors will get a nice workout just strolling around town. The Springs is famed for its fall colors with a plethora of rainbow leaves that brings in visitors from all of the US.

Senior travelers will surely find events going on during your visit as they happen all year long:  A Festival of the Arts, a Food & Wine Festival, and a giant Mardi Gras Extravaganza.

Eureka Springs has been awarded “TOP 25 ART TOWNS IN AMERICA” honor by the American Style Magazine for the past 4 years. Springs is in the plural and you will find 60+ natural springs, three lakes and over 1800 acres of city park land.

Senior Visitors Enjoy Resort Village

Eureka Springs is a unique resort village. The village has steep winding streets filled with Victorian-style cottages and manors. The old commercial section of the city has an alpine character, with an extensive street scape of well-preserved Victorian buildings.

The buildings are primarily constructed of local stone and lie along streets that curve around the hills and rise and fall with the topography in a five-mile long loop.

Eureka Springs was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and re-listed as Nationally Significant in 2004. Two super B&Bs and an historic hotel await your visit. Discover for yourself a unique village. jeb
