Seniors Surf on Down to Biarritz

A stylish beach town on France’s southwestern coast, Biarritz, was once the vacation spot for nobility and is now Europe’s surfing capital. It’s experienced a tourist renaissance—summers are busy.  Biarritz lacks the Riviera’s glitz, but senior travelers will see affluent vacationers in designer gear and surfers in flip-flops, and hear French, Spanish and Basque.

The Grande Plage is the center of the action. Behind it, visit the restored, Art Deco casino and wander the streets down to the old port to the west. Biarritz has long made its fortune from the sea: as a whaling settlement from the twelfth century onwards and in the 18th century doctors recommended that the ocean at Biarritz had therapeutic properties, inspiring patients to make pilgrimages to the beach for alleged cures for their ailments.

Beach of Kings and Wonderful Food Too

Located on the Atlantic seniors would expect to find great seafood but there is much much more. Do you know about Armagnac? Huile d’Olive? Les Huitres? It’s all here. Biarritz has the reputation as the “Queen of Beaches and the Beach of Kings“.

Lonely Planet notes that Biarritz is expensive, suggesting that you stay in Bayonne, just 8km to the west. Senior visitors will find 55 things to do in and around Biarritz as well as some great restaurants and additional sites. You’ll find it quite easy to slip over into Spainjust to the south of Biarritz.

Webcams, Weather, Map and a Photo Gallery

It’s all here. Yahoo lists the top hotels for you to check out. How about considering some holiday rentals or a great B&B?  Wikitravel, a great aid, will help you get to Biarritz and makes suggestions for buying, eating, drinking and sleeping.

If you’ve followed this travel blog very long you know by now that I think highly of TripAdvisorTheir information can be very helpful for senior travelers. Pick up a little French prior to your visit. You’ll find that even a few words will come in very handy.
