SENIORS HEAD UP TO THE BALTICS

Seniors Stop In Riga

Riga_ortseingang

Riga (a place where centuries meet) is the capital and the largest city of Latvia. With over 700,000  inhabitants, Riga is the largest city of the Baltic States and home to more than one third of Latvia’s population. Senior travelers will find the city in the center of the country on south coast of the Gulf of Riga, at the mouth of its longest river, the Daugava.

During Riga Restaurant Week, Riga’s restaurants open their doors to all gourmands willing to treat themselves to an array of delicious tastes for an especially affordable price of 15–20 euros for a three-course meal.

House_of_Blackheads_and_St._Peter's_Church_Tower,_Riga,_Latvia_-_Diliff

Riga was founded in 1201 by Albert of Bremen as a base for the Northern Crusades. It developed as the major trade hub of the Eastern Baltic during the high days of the Hanseatic League, ruled by the Archbishop of Riga.

Seniors Find A City Reconstructed and Restored

Much of Riga was bombed during World War II and the ruins were mostly left to decay until independence, when the government, realizing the tourism potential, began to invest in reconstructing and restoring the old buildings. Because of this restoration, Riga has one of the most complete old towns in Europe, called The Pearl of Architecture.

800px-Old_Riga,_LatviaThe official language is Latvian, however about half the population speaks Russian.  A vast majority are bi-lingual as are many countries in Europe. Wikitravel  can help you better understand the city and its rich history.

Lonely Planet calls Riga the “Paris of the North” and the “City that never sleeps.”

By now you know that this author thinks greatly of any and all World Heritage Sites, wherever they are on the globe.  They are always of cultural and historical importance. The Art Nouveau Center is such a site and not to be missed.

Seniors Will Enjoy Old City Riga

Jauniela_iela,_Riga,_Latvia_(3)

TripAdvisor offers a great list of things to see and do in Riga. Old City Riga (Vecriga) is where these seniors would start our visit. It is loaded with small squares where you can drink quality local beer in the open air in summer, or huddle over a hot bar snack in winter.

Riga’s Old Town is just made for wandering around and several walking tours are available. Don’t we love those areas in any historic city like this one? By the way, senior visitors will find 115 hotels in Riga.

US News and Travel suggests that senior travelers visit Riga in the summer, when the streets are alive and the weather is near perfect.

Because of its proximity to the Baltic Sea, Riga experiences surprisingly mild seasons compared to other Balkan cities.

Spend 36 hours in Riga via the NY Times and enjoy all the fun. Looks like one great city to me. That YouTube version above sold me on Riga. -jeb

SENIORS DRIVE THROUGH IOWA

This Iowan Goes To Clinton

CLINTON-sign123517

Clinton, Iowa whose population runs right at 27,000, along with nearby DeWitt, Iowa, was named in honor of the sixth governor of New York, DeWitt Clinton. This senior remembers Clinton very well.  When I was in high school, I delivered the Clinton Herald Newspaper to customers in Monmouth, my hometown.

Located only 30 minutes from I-80 and 20 minutes from I-88, Clinton sits on the eastern most section of Iowa along the banks of the majestic Mississippi River. Senior visitors will find one of the most beautiful river fronts on the entire Mississippi River.

Unknown

A visit to Clinton can include the Bickelhaupt Arboretum, Historical Society Museum, Felix Adler Children’s Discovery Center and a Class-A professional baseball team called the Lumberkings.

Seniors Find Historical Lumber Capital

Clinton is loaded with history. In the late 19th Century, it was known as the lumber capital of the nation. Huge log rafts were floated down river from Wisconsin and Minnesota, cut into lumber in Clinton, and then shipped to growing communities east, west, north and south via the river and railroads.

1280px-Clinton_County_Courthouse;_Clinton,_Iowa;_June_29,_2013_(2)

The railroad and the river continue to provide economic diversity in the area, attracting manufacturing and heavy industry to the community. A host of ongoing events includes the Annual Lumberjack Festival and the Blessing of the Bikes ceremony by the local clergy, so bring along your bike if you are interested, and have it blessed.

Clinton has been recently been added as a stop on the American Queen Upper Mississippi Tour for 2015. Consider taking an Upper Mississippi river cruise on an old-time steamer said to be a “floating antebellum mansion.” The Hop-On Hop-Off Tours featuring shore excursions are highly popular.

Seniors Meet Lumberjacks, Wineries and Riverboats

_1408904708

Other must see and do sites for senior visitors include the Wide River Winery, Eagle Point Park and the City of Clinton Showboat that was built in 1935 and named “The Omar.” She was converted from a tug to a showboat without losing her charming riverboat features and still has her 32 foot oaken paddlewheel.

Plan to visit the Sawmill Museum that can take you back in history when Clinton was so active with all those logs floating down the Mississippi. A recreated 1888 lumberjack camp for kids, and adults young at heart, is where you can come to play and live as lumberjacks and jills.

1280px-Curtis003

Clinton is home to Clinton Community College that was founded in 1946 with classes primarily made up of World War II veterans returning home. Ashford University adds to the educational scene.

Many classic older homes dot the landscape all over town. Senior visitors will find Clinton to be a welcoming and quaint river town where Iowans welcome folks of all ages. -jeb

The historic harbor and is divided into two sections, Lower Town and Upper Town. Fort Orange is the principal tourist attraction in town, dating back to the 17th century. TripAdvisor finds 28 things to see and do for first timers on the island.

Seniors Enjoy Shopping, Beaching and Birding

Many cruise ships stop at this fine destination for shopping, with Dutch cheese one of the specialities. For those who enjoy picking up some good Vitamin D, head for Arachi Beach where you will walk on very fine soft, sand and enjoy ideal sea conditions.

SENIORS TRAVEL TO NORTH CAROLINA COAST

Seniors Duck into Duck

Duck-Sign2

I read in a local Sunday newspaper that Duck is one of the top resort destinations with one of the best beaches on the East Coast. Duck, known for its upscale charm and boutique shopping is located a few miles North of Kitty Hawk. Senior travelers will discover a 7 mile stretch of beaches in the middle of NC Highway 12 in a totally natural setting.

The region was named for the many ducks and waterfowl in the area. During the peak vacation season the population increases to over 20,000.

Duck is loaded with history and has remained relatively undiscovered for hundreds of years since its initial settlement in the late 1600s.

Seniors, Do You Like Jazz and Fine Dining?

duck-hero

‘Duck is a resort town with an impressive reputation for great beaches, water sports and outdoor adventures, first-class events including a nationally-known Jazz Festival, fine dining, and eclectic shopping.’

A big attraction in Duck is the boardwalk where senior visitors can enjoy a quiet and leisurely stroll.

From Duck Town Boardwalk to Duck’s Cottage, the town offers many different types of activities, including: General Shopping, Piers & Boardwalks, Water Sports and General Tours so consider bringing  along your grandkids.

Charlottes_web

“This Outer Banks seaside town of 400 residents offers miles of clean beaches, miles of bike paths and a walkable village center with shops, restaurants, a sound-front park and lots of activities.

The area is especially well known for surfing due to the consistent winds, temperate weather, shallow sound waters and rolling ocean swells.”

Top Beaches In The Nation at Duck

hdr-sanderling-resort-map The wide, uncrowded Duck beaches have been ranked among the top in the nation, thus a primary focus is on getting wet in one fashion or another. Water sports are big, whether it’s swimming, surfing, sea kayaking, beach walking or just soaking up the sun lying by the ocean.

On the other side of this narrow island is Currituck Sound that is a perfect place to sail, paddle a canoe or kayak, parasail, Jet Ski or windsurf. Senior citizens will discover plenty see and do in Duck.

NC_duckhuntingblind

One of the largest draws to Outer Banks visitors is the fantastic collection of locally owned shops in the middle of Duck. One thing the town of Duck is known for, besides the beach, is its great shopping. “Duck is definitely the place to go when you’re longing for a little recreational retailing. The many stores are arranged in a series of low-key, coastal shopping complexes, and are close enough to each other that it’s easy to park the car and explore the stores on foot.”

Considering the area’s national popularity as one of America’s best beaches, it’s hard to believe that just a few decades ago, Duck’s only visitors were hunters and fishermen in search of, well, ducks.  -jeb

Seniors Discover Archeological Tourism

images-3Archaeotourism or Archaeological tourism is a form of cultural/heritage tourism. Leisure travelers, this senior learned,  represent 71% of the U.S. adult population, or approximately 170.4 million Americans.

76% of all leisure travelers (129.6 million) can be defined as cultural/heritage travelers, having participated in cultural/heritage activities on their most recent trip or within the past three years.

Archaeological sites and historic places are major tourist attractions worldwide. In the last few years, visits to historical sites have ranked third,  after dining in restaurants and shopping, among activities undertaken by visitors traveling abroad.

images-2

Archaeological tourism, or cultural/heritage tourism, has been defined as “travel designed to experience the places and activities that authentically represent the stories and people of the past. Cultural/Heritage tourism is a very big industry in the United States and worldwide and can include cultural, historic and natural resources.

Archaeological parks—prehistoric or historic sites preserved and interpreted for the public—have always been obvious tourism magnets for the communities in which they are located. Archaeological parks are one of the most important and impressive cultural riches in countries all over the globe.

Seniors Drawn to World Heritage Sites

Responsible_tourism_CHAT_education

Some of the most scientifically and historically important, aesthetically spectacular, and famous archaeological World Heritage Sites have seen a dramatic increase in numbers of visitors over recent decades.  The major challenge in Archaeological tourism programs is ensuring that increased tourism does not destroy the very qualities that attract visitors in the first place.

The Archeological Institute of America notes that the popularity of archaeological sites as tourist attractions means that they are valuable sources of revenue, but unfortunately this is often not matched by reinvestment in proper management to ensure both protection of the site and continued enjoyment of it by tourists.

images

Archaeological sites are fragile resources and inadequate site management will result in deterioration or even destruction of the site and its related social, historical, educational, and economic potential. The number of people that visit archaeological sites rises every year and the increase in traffic can result in damage to sites. In extreme cases, sites have been closed to the public to prevent further damage.

This Guide may help you to become more informed about Archaeological tourism. The Archaeological Institute of America is North America’s oldest and largest archaeological organization. The Institute has nearly 250,000 members and subscribers in more than 100 local societies.

It was chartered in 1906 by Congress in recognition of its work in developing the Antiquities Act, a cornerstone in the preservation of archaeological sites in the U.S. Today. So, read up a bit, make some plans, and enjoy an experience that may be your “once in a lifetime” tour. -jeb

SENIORS DRIVE TO SHEBOYGAN WISCONSIN

Seniors Enjoy the Spirit of the Lake

Sheboygan-City-Sign

Sheboygan, Wisconsin, on the shores of Lake Michigan, offers senior visitors an alluring mix of sandy beaches, historic B&Bs, luxurious spas, and the majestic Blue Harbor Resort and Conference Center.

The town’s location on the lake first made it a shipbuilding hub, but today attracts an array of surfers who enjoy the thrill of challenging waves. Surfers like to refer to the coastline as the “Malibu of the Midwest.”

I’ve always liked city names like “Sheboygan” and they usually carry with them an interesting history. There are many theories as to how the city got its name, but the most likely one indicates Sheboygan was a Chippewa Indian word meaning “passage or waterway between the lakes.”

161269_l

French explorers Jean Nicolett (1635) and Joliet and Marquette (1643) were probably the first “white men” to experience the shores of Sheboygan. Many years passed until in 1699, Father St. Cosme landed at a Pottawatomie Indian village at the site of the Sheboygan River.

Seniors Like Sport Fishing and Museum Hopping

Sheboygan is about 50 miles north of Milwaukee and 60 miles south of Green Bay. The Bookworm Gardens and the Kohler Arts Center are two top attractions in the city. Parks and museums abound and senior tourists enjoy them all.

sheboygan

If you enjoy fishing, take one of the sport-fishing charter boats and try your luck hauling in some good size salmon and trout. If you enjoy history, take the Wisconsin History Tour in Sheboygan. The county has 44 sites on the National Register of Historic Places and 23 are found in Sheboygan.

Migrants from New York, Michigan, and New England, were among the pioneers to the Sheboygan area in the 1830s. Among them were English immigrants, who had continued to enter the US in the early 19th century.

Lumbering was the first major industry and as one settler remarked “Nearly all the settlers were from the New England states and New York.” Today over 5,000 Hmong from Laos call Sheboygan home, resettling after the war in southeast Asia.

Seniors Attracted To The Arts

Senior visitors enjoy exploring three unique shopping areas – the South Pier Peninsula, the Riverfront Shanty Shops on the Boardwalk, as well as downtown Sheboygan.

The city is home to the refurbished 1920’s Stefanie Weill Center for the Performing Arts, as well as the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, nationally recognized for its collections of folk and vernacular art.

Senior visitors will discover that…”Our beaches are brighter. Our fish are bigger. Our golf is better. Our food is the best! And it’s fun to say our name. Try it…go ahead…She-boy-gan.

How do you Sheboygan? We surf, kite surf, wind surf, sail, kayak, jet ski, boat, fish, bike, hike, climb, race, golf, eat, drink, dance, relax, spa, enjoy. And we fry brats! We are the Bratwurst Capital of the World, after all.”

I know this to be true as I have been to Sheboygan and those brats are great. -jeb

Echo Lake State Park is a great place for a swim and a picnic. A scenic trail around the lake provides great views of sheer, 700-foot Cathedral Ledge which towers over the lake. A mile-long auto road and hiking trails lead to the top of Cathedral Ledge where views across the Saco River Valley to the White Mountains can be enjoyed.

Senior Wine Lovers Discover Provence

about-us-ps2I am pleased to introduce Emilie & Guillaume THYEBAUT to our Senior Citizen Travelers. Emilie and Guillaume are organizers of self-guided tour packages, especially for senior citizen travelers. Grab your coffee and   enjoy Emilie’s thoughts on wine tasting in Provence.

The Provence region, located in the South East of France is a true marvel for gourmet and history lovers. Independent senior travelers will find there everything they need to have a real taste of France.

From the Mediterranean Sea, in Marseille and the nearby Calanques Creeks in Cassis…to Montélimar area – half way to Lyon – Provence is not one single region but a medley of many different landscapes, wine terroirs and local traditions.

Senior travelers who may stay in the main tourist roads, Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, Arles, Marseille might miss the ambiance, the colors and flavors that make this region so special. It is really important to drive in Provence and get lost in the little roads weaving in gorgeous sceneries to really feel the beating heart of this part of France.

Seniors Meet Côtes du Rhône Wines

Provence Vineyards Landscapes - copy Benoit Dignac ADT Vaucluse

In the strict sense of the term the Provence wines includes 9 different AOC (protected appellation of origin) : Côtes du Ventoux (near Bedoin, Carpentras), Costières de Nimes (in Nimes area – Western Provence), Côtes du Luberon (East of Avginon), Côteaux de Pierrevert (near Sisteron), Côteaux d’Aix en Provence, Côteaux Varois (East of Aix), Bandol and Cassis (both nearby the Mediterranean Sea, East of Marseille).

When visiting the area, wine lovers should not miss the neighbor protected appellation of Côtes du Rhône – including Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines which are among the best red wines in the world. Chateauneuf-du-Pape town is only 35 minute drive from Avignon.

Chateauneuf du Pape specific soil with pebbles

There are many different ways to taste Provence wines and wine makers have developed a lot of different tools for travelers to discover the regional products.

Seniors Walk in the Vineyards

Many Provence wine makers have installed signs in their vineyards so senior travelers can discover the terroir before tasting the wines. It is very important to understand the features of a soil to better taste a wine.

For those who don’t want to walk, they can also drive a sand dune buggy 2 seat vehicle in the vineyards – following a local guide.

Some wine estates have found a nice solution to the drink & drive issue: after the tasting, they offer a great picnic in the estate – often with tables in the vineyards – so travelers can eat local cold cuts, cheeses and fruits – and rest – before driving. This is a simple activity but it might be one of the best memories of your trip!

Some local guides are very knowledgeable and take travelers to wineries they could not find by themselves. That’s a great way for wine connoisseurs to taste some specific wines they have identified in advance…or for wine “apprentice” to get introduced to wine tasting in several cellars – to be able to compare different types of wines.   Emilie

I don’t know about you, but India is on this senior’s travel bucket list.  Called a valley right out of heaven,  I discovered the entire region of Jammu and Kashmir is known as The Paradise on Earth. It is a major Hindu and Muslim pilgrim area.

Jammu and Kashmir’s major attractions lie in scenic beauty, snow clad peaks, lush green valleys, Alpine villages, cascading waterfalls and flower gardens. Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir is located at the heart of the Kashmir valley. The river Jhelum flows through the city adding to its beauty and Nagin and Dal lakes enhance the picturesque quality of the setting.

Dal lake, one of the most beautiful lakes in India, is the second largest lake of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Situated at the foothill of the mountain Zabarwan, the lake is surrounded by number of willow and poplar trees and the banks of this lake are adorned by several blooming gardens and orchards.

Mahatma Gandhi once said “if there is heaven on earth it’s here in Kashmir.” The Valley is known as a “food paradise” as well. Other major sites in Kashmir include Jama Masjid, one of the most important mosques in Srinagar. This mosque was constructed in 1400 AD by Sultan Sikandar.

Winter activities include dog sledding, ice skating, cross-country and heli-skiing, tracking, skating, and alpine or nordic skiing and snowshoeing.

Seniors Awed By Nature’s Beauty

National Geographic notes that simplicity marks the origin of Banff. In 1883, on the slopes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, three railway workers discovered a natural hot spring, and from there the park was born. By the mid-1900s, Lake Louise and most of the surrounding nearby rivers as well as several other points of interest were added to the park’s boundaries, making it the largest in Canada.

With its majestic mountain scenery, stunning wildflowers, indigo blue rivers and lakes, icy white glaciers and high grey peaks jutting into the sky, Banff is a favored vacation destination for travelers the world over.

The town of Banff, 8,244 residents, is abuzz year round due to an annual influx of millions of visitors. This famous mountain resort town caters accordingly with world-class shopping, dining and an array of accommodations, from cabins and campgrounds to B&Bs and top notch hotels.

images-3I have relatives who make it a point to get away from the hustle and bustle of work and each year head for Banff. They find it an ideal base for hiking and wildlife viewing excursions into surrounding park areas and provides a popular weekend retreat with excellent restaurants and several great golf courses.

It’s all there in Banff: dazzling glaciers, big animals, alpine meadows and emerald lakes. So senior friends, put Banff on your travel bucket list and head out for Alberta.  jeb
